Lights dim, crowds hush and phones are silenced. Students take the stage to show off their talents.

On October 26, the Alan Harvey Theater held the first ever “Piedmont’s Got Talent” show. Students showed off their talents in music, dance, singing and acting. Organized by senior Greg Afong, the fundraiser for the performing arts and the Breakerz club raised a total of $1,222.

Afong said he plans on splitting the money with the acting and dance department and the Breakerz club.

“We are also trying to show students what kind of clubs we have at the school and encourage them to participate in them,” Afong said.

Afong started the show because he thought it would be a fun opportunity to show what Piedmont students have to offer.

“There are so many talented students and I didn’t feel like we had the chance to show how much they have,” Afong said.

Junior Claire Pinkham, who is in The Troubadours, said the performers wanted to present to the community the amazing talents that Piedmont High has to offer.

“I had an amazing time,” senior saxophone player Seb Mueller. “It was a fun and interesting way to do something that is mundane, for example making money for a fundraiser.”

Senior Alex Beisner, who is part of the Ukulele club, performed Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” with the rest of the ukulele club.

“I enjoyed dressing up in Hawaiian clothes so I had a great time on-stage,” Beisner said.

Afong said that he might put together another talent show later in the year.

“It was really fun, everything went smoothly but it’s a lot of work. Maybe I’ll do another one second semester,” Afong said.

Mueller said that he would participate again because it was “super righteous.”

Beisner said that the Talent show was a great way to show everyone the arts at PHS.

“I think it should become an annual thing. It’s important for other students and the community to see what PHS students have to offer,” Pinkham said.

Junior Allyson Chan, who attended and watched the talent show said the MC’s and all of the acts were good and it would be hard to pick just one act to be her favorite.

Many students enjoyed the acting by MC’s Wes Dunlap and Billy Ireland. They did several things that gave the audience a good laugh including jokes and, using sock puppets, and calling students from the audience to come on stage.

“Wes and Billy were awesome. They were so funny and so relaxed. They had some wild fans in the front and back,” Chan said.
