Students with a free first period often sleep in and come late to school, but now there is a reason to arrive at school early. Every other week during a free first period the Breakfast Club makes pancakes for anybody that comes by the cafeteria.

The club charges about $3 per person for a plate of pancakes. Senior Garret Hodos said that the club is still trying to find the right amount to charge where they can break even and attract people.

“At the beginning of the year I was disappointed that I had a free 1st period, but my friends and I proposed an idea that we create a club where we make breakfast during our free first periods,” Hodos said.

Hodos and senior Alec Petty are co-founders of the Breakfast Club.

“Jake Pacheco, Alec, and Julia Caldwell are really the head chefs of the entire operation. I just came up with the idea for the club,” Hodos said.

Senior Julia Caldwell works closely with senior Jake Pacheco to plan the recipes and the meals. Pacheco also serves as the club’s treasurer.

“I manage the donations, work with Alec for the finances, and plan the events,” Pacheco said.

Hodos said that about 10-15 people have come in the past weeks and said that he is trying to have hundreds or maybe thousands flock to taste his pancakes.

“We put a lot of love, passion, and dedication into the craft that makes our pancakes special,” Hodos said.

The club has only made pancakes so far, but the founders plan to venture out further and possibly make other breakfast items such as waffles and bacon.

Hodos said that the breakfast possibilities are limitless with his culinary talent.

“We provide all the materials to make the pancakes and use the cafeteria kitchen just to have a place to cook,” Hodos said.

The club cooks use their own griddle and ingredients for the pancakes.

“I’m a huge fan of pumpkin pancakes, so we plan to institute a wide variety of pancakes into future breakfast meetings,” Hodos said.

A problem that the club has faced so far is attracting more people, because the meetings occur during first period where most students are in class.

“I probably won’t be able to come to any of the Breakfast Club because I can’t really get out of APUSH during first period,” junior Henry Taylor said.

Hodos said the point of the club is not for profit, but to have a good time during his free first with his friends.

“I now see my free first period as a positive rather than a negative because I get to bring people together in the delicious form of pancakes,” Pacheco said.
