Teachers should not be afraid to talk about religion

PHS prides itself in giving a comprehensive education to every student, but there is a missing focus on learning about religion. Understanding religion is important because it opens up room for discussion between people of different beliefs. There is a disconnect in the classroom between those who practice religion and those who do not—students who practice religion better understand allusions in English literature that reference religious texts. Those who do not practice may feel religion is an uncomfortable topic to discuss because they are afraid that they will come across as ignorant. PUSD has made attempts to teach about religions through the 7th grade unit that covered the histories and customs of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Religion can be seamlessly integrated into high school English and History curriculum, educating those who practice and those who don’t to create an environment where religion can be discussed more openly. Because the majority of Americans practice some sort of religion, it is crucial to incorporate learning about religion into the curriculum.
