The senior voice: in January

BOOYAH! It is second semester and I am ready to party. As the days begin to warm, other students may find me casually strolling around the halls during extended “bathroom breaks,” sporting flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts, and bro-tanks. Well not really, since it still is quite cold out.

photo copy 3In the next few months I can finally take my figurative foot off the figurative gas pedal and explore what other interests I have, as college is on-lock. While I do have to keep up decent grades, finally I can relax a little.

Here is a brief list of some things I want to do second semester:

Go to the beach. It has been a while since my skin has seen an adequate amount of sunlight, so it is time to get tanned up and be looking suave for end of year photos.

Play pick-up. Last year I periodically would go to Hampton with some buddies and play some basketball on the hoops behind the tennis courts. It’s time to get going again.

Get a job. Nothing too crazy, but extra funds could come in handy. With the amount of times my friends and I go to Wendy’s at lunch, maybe I will send them an application. I pretty much know the menu by heart.

Attend Piedmont Community Church’s annual Mexico trip. I have not gone before and judging from the hundreds of cheerful Facebook photos uploaded after each time my peers come back, it looks like a lot of fun.

Get yolked.

In between doing these activities, I will also have ample time to reflect on what the past three and a half years at PHS has meant to me. While most of the time I appear pumped for the entire college experience that awaits me, I sometimes feel scared that these last few months will go by too fast. By the time we all graduate, many of us will have been with some of the same classmates since kindergarten. It is what every senior at every high school in America goes through to a certain extent, but sometimes the separation anxiety gets to me.

To me, the best thing to do is to forget about any sentimental feelings for the time being and spend time with my friends like normal.

I recently heard some good advice from a friend that graduated last year. While as a second-semester senior there is much more freedom to slack off and party more frequently, try to stay away from hindering on borderline grades come second semester. It would be “so much more chill bro,” if you can take your last week of high school is not stress-laden with worries of final grades.

If anybody wants to come to the Hampton Field courts to ball (or attempt to ball), you’re more than welcome. We play on Wednesdays.
