The men’s tennis team brought a halt to their 12-year league-match winning streak with a 6-1 loss to Castro Valley High School on March 12. The win-streak began when Piedmont was part of the Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL).

“We never lost a league match in BSAL. [The WACC league] is definitely much tougher,” said varsity tennis coach Neil Rothenberg. “There are four [schools] that have very good tennis teams, and right now Castro Valley is the best. There’s no shame in losing to this team. They’re good.”

Rothenberg said that though he tried to warn his players that Castro Valley was a strong team, the players were a little overconfident because they were so used to winning in league matches.

“We were physically prepared, however not mentally prepared,” said varsity tennis captain senior Andy Slabaugh. “We were confident and I think a little too laid back going into the match.”

Rothenberg said that there is to be another match against Castro Valley, and thinks Piedmont still has a chance.

“We’re not going anywhere yet,” Rothenberg said. “We’re still going to have a great record by the end of the season and hopefully get into the NCS. That’s our goal. To get into NCS.”

He said that though the rest of the team was defeated freshman Ricky Peters and Brian Lai played well in their doubles match, even though it was only their second time playing together.

“They were the only ones that were victorious and they won in straight sets,” Rothenberg said.

Varsity tennis captain senior Charlie Newcomb said that though Piedmont tried its best, Castro Valley was the better team, but he has a plan for next time.

“Next time we play them we’ll just stay positive, stay in control of all the points, and play the best tennis we can,” Newcomb said.
