ccc student alumni blogs2010 PHS graduate Kelsey James-Kavanaugh wrote, “Let me start out by saying that UC Davis is the bomb diggity. Yes, that’s right. I just used a phrase coined from the uber peppy and slightly ridiculous but all the while entertaining movie Bring it On.”

College and Career Center (CCC) Director Sandra Brod spearheaded the PHS Grads at College Blog, a website for students to read alumni experiences in college including overall experience, social scene, classes, roommate and housing, and food.

On the website, www.phsgradsatcollege.com, alumni submit their stories to Brod, which are then posted on the website after they have been reviewed for inappropriate content and a picture of the college has been selected.

CCC Parent volunteer Joy Hunt has helped implement and maintain the project with Brod, and said the first blog was posted in November of 2012. The website will become more and more useful as the number of posts increase, Hunt said.

“I think that it’s great former Piedmont students have taken the time to reflect on their college experience,” senior Garret Hodos said after being introduced to the blogs in his English class. “These blogs will be especially beneficial to those seniors who are considering various colleges to attend next year.”

Hodos said the blog should try and get more students to share their stories, because unfortunately, there was not an entry about any of the schools he applied to.

The schools that have blogs so far are UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Berkeley City College, Kenyon College, Colgate University, Carleton College, University of Vermont and Harvard College.

“Our blogs are really student to student, not a parent view,” Brod said. “I use it with my students when we are making a college list. I noticed that students were more open to adding a college to their list after reading a variety of blogs.”

On the tab “About this Blog” on the website, Brod explains her motives for creating the website. She said she realized that one of the most significant influences in students’ decisions regarding college involves alumni opinion.

Brod’s goal is to hear from alumni from a variety of colleges, and ultimately, help students decide what is the right college match.

Additionally, there is a tab on the website called “Where PHS Grads Are Now”, which lists the colleges attended by PHS 2010 and 2011 graduates and the number of students attending each school. There is also a tab called “When Visiting A College”, which gives tips on getting the most out of college visits.
