The all school art show was held April 25 for two dimensional and three dimensional work. Junior Leslie Zhang won best in show for her two dimensional and sophomore Sophia Gotch won best in show for her three dimensional piece.
Art teacher Gillian Bailey and ceramics teacher Susan Simonds recruited local artists to come and judge the 2-D and 3-D pieces separately. Bailey and Simonds said the judges were looking at the art pieces a couple of hours before the start of the show choosing winners.
For both 3-D and 2-D art there were six categories. Each category awarded first second and third place along with an overall honorable mention and best in show.
The categories for 3-D included best use of texture, most adventurous, best teapot with cups, best craftsmanship, best functional and best non-functional.
The categories for 2-D art included most expressive, best color portrait, best black and white portrait, best painting, best drawing, and best print.
Zhang said that her inspiration for her winning piece came from Bailey pulling her away from her reoccurring motif of hands.
“[Bailey said] that I should stray away from hands for my next piece’s subject matter. So I drew an amputee,” Zhang said.
Zhang had previously won first place for the most expressive category last year for her pastel piece of shoes along with other non-school related art contests.
“I encourage fellow art students to bend the rules to suit yourself,” Zhang said. “To challenge what is considered [a] socially acceptable subject matter.”
Simonds said that she is very proud of the outcome of the work.
“I think the level of work is exceptional and the kids have worked very hard,” Simonds said. “All their hard work has paid off and it shows. They’ve done really well.”
Bailey said that the work really speaks for itself.
“The quality and the effort that shows through and the creativity and the originality is really nice,” said Bailey.
