Olympians encourage students to pursue dreams

imageWater Polo Olympic medalists Heather Petri and Brenda Villa spoke to PHS and PMS girls on Wednesday, May 8 about their Olympic experience, encouraging the audience of young women to pursue their dreams.

Villa said she wanted to speak to this group because she knows the importance that sports can play in the lives of young girls and how it can give one confidence and teach life skills.

“When Mrs. Hernandez came to me and asked me to talk to these girls, that is exactly what I wanted to do,” Villa said, “anytime I can speak to a group of girls and tell them how empowering sports can be, I take the opportunity and do it.”

After sharing their stories of encouragement, Petri and Villa answered questions from the audience.

“It was really interesting because my friends and I really want to play water polo next year so hearing about the sport from two people who went to the Olympics for water polo was really cool,” eight grader Taylor Scofield said.

Junior Kesy Platt thought the presentation was inspirational and loved hearing about how the women got to where they are now.

“It gave everyone a good view about how their life is and how anyone can reach their goals if they want to,” she said.
