The senior voice: in May

photo-1Sitting in the classroom on a warm, sunny day, my mind cannot help but drift towards the next four years of my life, college. As I think about the future, I also reflect on the past and think to myself, well this is it. The complex, perplexing, intriguing time of high school is almost over and we will be heading our separate ways soon. With the end of this era approaching, I believe the seniors should look back on our time, and also enjoy our final moments here at Piedmont because before we know it, we will be at college starting the next chapter of our lives.

Personally, there are a number of things I wish I had done throughout my four years.

1. Try sports I had never played. Looking back on it, I now wish I had diversified my sports. Instead of playing solely baseball, at the bare minimum I should have played football. I could have experienced what another sport was like, with a whole new group of coaches and teammates. While spending my first years of high school supporting the team from the stands, I could have spent the next couple receiving the support from my fellow classmates and Piedmonters, absorbing all the energy they had to give and funneling it back into my play.

2. Go to more high school events. For many years I tended to shy away from school-sponsored events, such as homecoming dances or movies put on by ASB in the cafeteria. Everyone says this school needs more school spirit, and I have always agreed, but I never really acted on it. School spirit isn’t going to get much better until students, freshmen through seniors, go to events created for the sole purpose of school-spirit.

3. Limit my procrastination. Everyone does it to an extent, but looking back at it, if I had taken a more active approach to my schoolwork, I wonder what could have happened. Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely happy with the way things have turned out in the end for me, but there’s always part of me who thinks about the possibilities had I worked harder.

Going into college, I’m aiming to change those past regrets I have, and turn them into highlights of my college experience. As I get comfortable at school, I want to get involved into any and all intramural sports possible. Some goals of mine are leading an intramural soccer team and playing an oddball sport like inner tube water polo or ultimate frisbee. In addition to playing sports, I am planning on attending many college events, such as attending all sport games. Not only attending the games, but being an active fan, sitting and cheering loudly in all the student sections. The only way I’ll be able to do that, however, is to get all my work done. That means really buckling down on my work, and the more specialized classes for my major should also help keep my attention as well. I’ll be out every weekend, soaking up college, so my time during the weekdays must be spent wisely working hard to keep up the grades.
