Seniors earn awards at the Spring instrumental concert

On Tuesday June 4, the PHS symphonic band, jazz band, and orchestra held their last concert of the school year. In addition to each group playing their respective three songs, the Music Department Senior Awards were also handed out.

The symphonic band started off the concert, which began at 7:30 pm at the Allen Harvey Theater, with Overture for Winds by Charles Carter. Following the opening piece, the band, led by conductor Andria Mullan, played Irish Folk Song Suite by Frank Erickson and then True Blue March by Karl King, arranged by Swearingen.

After the third and final song, Mullan, with the help of music department chair Jan D’Annunzio, handed out the Senior Concert Band Awards. Senior Cooper Wetherbee won the Outstanding Senior in Band Award for his trumpet playing and senior Natalie Kucirek won the prized Music Department Award for her involvement in the entire music department. Kucirek was recognized for her flute playing in band class and the many musicals, as well as playing the saxophone in jazz band, leading the Pep Band this year at sporting events and organizing Music Buddies, which provides tutoring services for elementary school kids on their specific instruments.

Up next was the jazz band, which performed It Don’t Mean a Thing by Ellington, which also included a singing performance by sophomore Dylan Miller. Next was Fabes of Faubus by Charles Mingus, and then Summertime, another song including singing by Dylan Miller.

At the end of the jazz band performance, Senior Awards were again handed out, with senior Sebastian Mueller winning the first ever Outstanding Senior in Jazz Band Award and Joey Armstrong winning the Music Director’s Award for his percussion playing.

For the final performance of the night, the orchestra played Realistation et orchestration, including a solo by senior Marina Fennell on the viola. Next, senior Molly Niemuth had a solo on the violin with senior Ryan Sullivan accompanying her on the cello. For the last song of the night, the orchestra played Flute Concerto in G Major by Mozart with a solo by Kucirek on the flute. Niemuth, senior Jason Kuh, and Fennell all won Senior Awards for Orchestra.
