Top 10 things to do over the summer

1. Paramount Theatre – at this ancient theater, you can catch movies from all different time periods, from the most recent films to the classics. Before the movie, they show news clips, a short film, and even previews from the time the movie was made. The theater also serves different types of foods, from classic theater food such as popcorn and hotdogs to full course meals.

2. Oakland Zoo – this is a fun trip to take with your family or just with a friend. The animals are adorable and the zoo also includes fun rides, such as a chair lift that travels over the whole zoo. On specific days, people are also allowed to feed certain animals and even pet them. A popular feeding is to feed bananas to giraffes.

3. Fairyland – If you are feeling like you want to travel back to the glory days, Fairyland is a fun and relaxing place to go. It includes rides and you are guaranteed to have a blast. Fairyland is a popular place for children, but is also fun for teenagers to have fun with friends, and for adults to feel young once again.

4. Mountain View Cemetery – this is a common hangout spot for many high school students, especially during the summer. When the weather is beautiful and the sun is shining, you can lay on the perfectly cut green grass and enjoy the sun. Grab a Bakesale Betty’s and eat it on the freshly cut grass in the cemetery.

5. San Francisco Chinatown – this is a fun trip to take with a group of friends. The food is absolutely delicious and it is also fun to visit the family owned shops to buy little trinkets to take home. From visiting a more touristy attraction, such as the Portsmouth Square, or the “Heart of Chinatown,” or taking a relaxing walk through one of the many beautiful parks, Chinatown is full of culture, active events and most importantly, great food.

6. Tilden Park – if the weather is nice and hiking sounds appealing, take a trip to Tilden. With its beautiful scenery and smooth trails, this is a nice place to hike with family or friends. There are well known trails that are very popular and well used, but there are also trails that are less common and that may be more peaceful and challenging; Tilden has trails for almost all kinds of hikers.

7. Lake Merritt – Lake Merritt is a nice place for a relaxing jog, or just a slow walk around the lake. There is also a nice grassy area surrounding the lake; a picnic in Lake merritt is something everyone should experience. There are also nice restaurants and cafes nearby that have beautiful views that overlook the lake.

8. Montclair Farmers Market – this farmers market is located on the intersection between LaSalle Ave. & Moraga Ave. in Montclair. It is the perfect place to buy fresh and organic produce. All of the fruits and vegetables are always juicy and ripe, and there are so many options when it comes to food that it can be overwhelming. There are also shops along the streets where you can buy jewelry, clothing, flowers and much more. The vendors are very friendly and will keep you coming back every week.

9. CREAM– this is a very unique ice cream shop located on Telegraph in Berkeley. CREAM combines warm, freshly baked cookies with cold, creamy ice cream to make any desired ice cream sandwich. With many different flavors of ice cream and many different kinds of cookies to choose from, almost any desired ice cream sandwich is possible.

10. Oakland Ferry – this may bring back fond memories for some people. The Oakland Ferry is a relaxing and enjoyable trip to take with friends or family. Enjoy a refreshing drink while relaxing on the deck, the wind blowing through your hair, or play some cards inside with friends. Travel to Alcatraz or Angel Island, and enjoy a picnic. Then, relax once again on the trip back to Oakland.
