reid goen originalThey have pictures of each other on their desks, they taught a class together last year, and now they are pregnant at almost exactly the same time.

English teacher Rosie Reid’s teaching position was made public recently to take over her classroom while she is gone, and the school district will have to go through a rigorous process in choosing her substitute because the absence is so long.

“I’m happy to help the district help someone fill my position,” Reid said.

Reid said that there has been talk of putting her on an interview committee in order to find a replacement for her while she is gone because she will be returning to teach for a few months at the end of theschool year.

Although Reid said that she will be sad to leave, she thinks that the school will be able to survive without her.

“I think that my students will have mixed reactions,” Reid said. “It depends on their own opinion towards me and depends on the kid.”

Senior and former student Miranda Wiebe said, “I love Mrs. Goen being pregnant because it helps me remember the cycle of life and rebirth.”

Courtney Goen will also be going on maternity leave for about six months. She does not yet know specifically when, but is hoping it is around second sememster.

“I didn’t think my students would care that I was pregnant; I was surprised that they were so excited for me,” Reid said.

Goen said that she didn’t really notice her students treating her differently, but that she makes a lot of jokes about being pregnant.

“I probably act differently more than my students treat me differently.”

“Ideally, I will be able to leave at the semester, then be able to take off most of the second semester, or all of it,” Goen said.

Goen would also like to be part of the process in choosing who will replace her during her absence. The district will be going through the same process in choosing a substitute for her while she is gone, and welcome her on the interview committee.

“I would like to be involved in choosing who will substitute for me,” Goen said. “But I’m also hoping that I will know who the person will be so that we can work together.”

Goen said that because the semester will create a natural break in the year, the effect of her leaving will be minimal on her students.

“I think it’s ultimately very good for kids to learn to adapt to new situations,” Reid said. “Obviously it’s not the kind of thing we can plan or overcome.”

Goen said that her maternity leave will hopefully have a positive impact on her students.

“In college, most students will have new teachers every semester, so I think ultimately it’s good for them to be exposed to different situations,” Goen said.

Goen and Reid are both very excited to be pregnant at the same time.

“I’m so glad that Goen will be on maternity leave with me,” Reid said. “Our babies can be best friends and/or get married.”

Goen also said that it is great being able to talk to each other in times of need.
