Triathlon Club Springs up on Campus this Year

Starting this fall students can run, bike and swim with the new triathlon club.  The team will be competing in local competitions in and around the Bay Area.  Started by four juniors, Jordan Marcus, Daniel Jones, Elijah Levy and Skyler Liu, the triathlon club is open to any and all students who have an interest in competing in triathlons.

tri2The idea for the club came around when some of the founding students found out that College
Preparatory School had triathlon team, and the founding member wanted to bring that to Piedmont.  Last year the CPS triathlon club competed in the USA High School Triathlon Conference, where they won 1st in their division.  10 students competed and were accompanied by their coach and advisor, Emma Sloan.  Our school’s advisor is none other than science teacher, Mr. Savage.

“[Savage] is a good teacher for us and he knows how things should be done.” Marcus said.

Mr. Savage has been doing triathlons for about five years.  He started in college with his friends and has been competing ever since.  Savage will be helping out with training sessions and sharing advice with the club members that he has gathered from his many years of experience.

“I really think that anybody can do a triathlon, you really only need to own a bike and be able to swim because anybody can run,” Savage said.

At each match there will be 10 to 15 students competing against each other in teams of three; one person will run, one will bike and one will swim. The club has nowhere to go but up and Savage said that in a few years they want to have a larger group of kids.  The preliminary races will be at an introductory level and will take about an hour to complete.  The harder, Olympic distance races, will take around two-and-a-half hours to complete.

“I’m most looking forward to spending time with my friends and meeting new people through the club,” said Elijah Levy.
