Bury your head even deeper in the sand

Bury+your+head+even+deeper+in+the+sand

The news blares through my groggy thoughts. I want nothing more than to sleep a bit longer, so I pull the covers farther up over my head. Turn it off! I shout from my private place of ignorance and bliss.

I hear the news anchor droning on about gas prices, so I borrow my head deeper into my pillows. But all I can think about is how this will affect my allowance for the week.

Next, the news drags on about lawsuits against daily fantasy sports companies. Soon the pillow is over my head, covering my ears.MAX HEADSHOT

As I yell to my mom to shut off the news, my mind is filled with nothing but my wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and thoughts about my fantasy football league matchup this week.

We really do not need to know what is going on in the world. Aside from the fact that it decides the fate of the world we live in, global news does not affect us. Why should we care if there is a war in the Middle East? It will not affect us here in the all-powerful United States of America.

Well, at least not much. When the War on Terror drains our tax dollars and exacerbates the federal budget deficit, we might end up with another government shutdown. But even that is not that impactful because when the government shuts down, I can still fill up my tank at the nearest Valero. We can all proceed with our routines.

Well, that is until gas prices spike so high we can not drive anywhere. But, you know, other than that, we will not feel the impact.

Besides the fact that it does not really matter, I do not have time to keep up with the bazillion things that are going on. I am a busy junior doing his best to keep his grades up. I am actually so busy checking the Infinite Campus app that I cannot read the morning or evening news rundowns on the New York Times app, nor check the one sentence long breaking news updates. I have not slept for a few weeks at least, so why would I ever check the news?

My mom tells me that knowing all this stuff about the world will help me. I can impress teachers and college interviewers. But is it not worth my time to be an informed citizen who makes educated decisions and has a positive impact on the world.

I would rather sit in my ignorance and let other people decide my fate. Who cares who the next president is? When I watched the Republican debate, for the sole purpose of impressing Mr. Cowherd, I realized that I did not really care who won the election. I do not care if Donald Trump builds a wall across the entire Mexican-American border or if Ben Carson outlaws abortion because it is the second coming of slavery in America.

Besides, I can’t even vote, so other people can just decide for me. I am sure everyone else will know what is going on. There must be some pretty good reasons for Carson and Trump to be leading in the polls. Surely not everyone will ignore global and national events like I do.

I do not want to pay attention simply because I do not care.

Knowledge is power, and I want none of that.
