Over four thousand views. Six weeks. Thirty songs. Six minutes and twelve seconds. Eleven singers. One Youtube video. One shared love for the acapella group, Pentatonix.

After seeing Pentatonix in concert in February, “Pentaholics” sophomores Kay Sibal, Morgan Shelly, Anna Campbell, Ko Narter, junior Keith Sibal and seniors Tyler Ellis and Sarah Chin and four friends from other schools, started making a video to express their appreciation for the group.

Pentatonix is well known for their covers of popular songs and evolutions like “Evolution of Music” or “Evolution of Beyonce.”

Kay, who arranged the medley of all the songs Pentatonix has ever recorded, said that the video, “Evolution of Pentatonix,”  is a tribute to the acapella group.Youtube Video

“After seeing them live in February, I was crying because I just saw them live and met them,” Kay said. “I wanted them to notice me and I was very inspired.”

The video was published on YouTube on Nov. 3, and has already racked up more than 4,800 views, as of Dec. 11.

Both Sibal siblings, Narter and Chin said they hope that Pentatonix will see the video and hopefully comment on their work.

“We are hoping that Pentatonix will see it,” Chin said. “It hasn’t happened yet, but we’re trying.”

Even though she is still hoping to achieve her final goal of having Pentatonix see their work, Kay said that the process of making the video was rewarding in itself.

“I learned that there is so much more to making a video than just recording and posting it,” Kay said.

In addition, Keith said that making the video has made him appreciate music on a whole new level.

“Music is super fun,” Keith said. “I’m glad I got into singing and performance, and things just like this.”

Along with being able to expertly manipulate their voices to sing cool melodies and pitches, Pentatonix works cohesively as a group, Narter said.

“They can sing tightly in a group with difficult harmonies,” Narter said. “People are beatboxing, singing overtones and singing really difficult passages but they’re working really well together and make it sound easy.”

Keith said he admires how talented Pentatonix is and how they have helped transform music today.

“I really like how Pentatonix has brought this sophistication and musicality to popular music,” Keith said. “Often times, the common song you hear on the radio doesn’t really have interesting parts to it, but when Pentatonix does a cover of a song, they make it super interesting and in a lot of ways they just make it better.”

Chin said that being a musician has helped her appreciate Pentatonix’s talent.

“They are just really unique in that not only are they musically accurate, they’re very original too,” Chin said.

As for what is next for these “Pentaholics,” Narter said Kay is arranging a new project based on Pentatonix’s newest album, which was released a day before the Piedmont students posted their video.
