People flip, jump, and slide across the gym floor as if they are defying gravity. The crowd goes wild.

Founded in 2009, the Breakers Dance Crew consists of 9 members and is led by junior Princeton Liu.

Using their original song mix-ups and professionally choreographed routines, the Breakers are always the most highly anticipated part of every rally.

Liu, who is leading the group for the first time, said that he was originally motivated to join after watching leader Robert Yu, who was a game changer.

“He was such a talented dancer,” Liu said.  “I saw what he could do, and I knew immediately that I wanted to learn from him.”

Breakers 1 by Oli BogleAfter seeing Yu make such an impact on the Breaker’s dynamic, Liu sought to expand and recruit new people.

“I wanted to make it open to everyone,” Liu said.  “In the past it has been a considerably small group, but we really focused on getting the word out there.”

While students usually practice every Friday, Sophomore Joseph Ha said that this years group may need a little bit more help to be successful in the rallies.

“We have a lot more people this year,” he said.  “We kind of need to get everyone caught up to speed, because so far we are pretty inexperienced.”

With their inexperience however comes leadership opportunities for the group members who have been in the group for years.

Junior Kizik Trippe, who has been with the Breakers for three years, said that he is excited to teach the new kids and help them develop their skills.

“Princeton is the best in the group by far,” Trippe said.  “We need to teach the newer guys to be in harmony with all of us and not let one person steal the show.”

During a usual practice, members will come in and immediately get to work. From using old routines to forming new ones, the team is always looking for ways to improve.

“It is really fun to try new things,” Ha said.  “Finding new combinations of songs and moves is a challenge, but we make it work.”
