New testing center awaits funding to open doors

The school is waiting for funding to officially open the new testing center in the library for teachers and students to use when students need to makeup tests.

The testing center will be an alternative option for teachers handling students who need to make up tests and quizzes in an organized manner. If a student is absent for a test, the teacher can send the test down to the testing center for the student to take at their leisure, rather than schedule a time to take tests with their teacher during class, after and before school, or during a free period.

Testing Center taken by Sara“It takes some of the challenges for scheduling make-ups out of the equation,” said last year’s teacher on special assignment in charge of investigating testing centers at other schools Gabrielle Kashani.

The new testing center will be beneficial for both teachers and students because it creates a system that conforms to their busy schedules, said assistant principal and testing center organizer Eric Mapes. Teachers will not be required to use the testing center although Mapes believes that the center will be put to good use, especially if it is made convenient for teachers and students.

“I think the it’s a great idea,¨ junior Josh Wood said. ¨It seems like it will make things a lot simpler for everyone.”

Mapes hopes to finalize funding as soon as possible but is currently unsure of exactly when this will happen. The testing center hours will depend on the funding they receive and times that seem to work best with teacher and student schedules.

“The goal was to establish consistency and accuracy in administering tests,” Kashani said. “[It] is a quiet, structured place where students can make up tests without the hassle of scheduling time,”

Palo Alto High School’s testing center is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The small size of Piedmont in comparison to other high schools means that the center may not need to be open for as many hours.
