Millennium auction roars to a success

“Family.” That is the word that parent of a Millennium graduate Dana Serleth used to describe Millennium High School.

IMG_1806The idea of family was evident when over one hundred people gathered in the Piedmont Veteran’s Memorial building for an auction to raise money for MHS on March 20.

The event was planned and executed by the MHS ASB class as well as other students who wanted to volunteer. The night was 20’s themed, an idea conceived by ASB vice president junior Cerina Smit.

“I chose the theme because I was in charge of the decorations and felt that it would be a fun theme for the guests to dress up and the students to plan,” Smit said.

The event kicked off at 4 p.m. with the silent auction. The items ranged from MHS students offering their cleaning services for a day to an electric guitar signed by the members of Green Day.IMG_1651

Dinner was prepared and served by Millennium students, many of whom were dressed for the 20’s theme. The silent auction continued until dessert, when each table was given a torch and the ingredients for s’mores so that they could have their own indoor campfires.

MHS parent Michelle Mike said that within the last three years the event has become more family oriented, and the decorations and auction items have improved

The celebration as a whole was to support what MHS parent Huldah Hodgkinson called Piedmont’s best kept secret: Millennium High School.

“It being a smaller school and smaller community has really benefitted my daughter as well as my family because she’s happier there,” Hodgkinson said. “It’s a really supportive community.”

Many parents continue to support the school even after their children graduate.

“Millennium’s such a wonderful experience for the students,” Serleth said. “It’s such a warm environment and my son learned so much. I love the faculty, the staff and the students.”

As the silent auction came to an end and the live band closed out the night, the effect Millennium has had on its students and parents was evident by the enthusiasm everyone had about donating and representing the school.

“[MHS] has helped my son identify who he is and become confident and strong,” Mike said. “Once we leave here, I know there’s nothing that he can’t do or accomplish. Whether he fails or not, he’ll get right back up and he’ll keep going.  Millennium has given him the armor to do that.”
