On Monday, August 21st, a total solar eclipse will cross the continental U.S. from coast to coast. In Piedmont, we will experience a partial solar eclipse.
PHS will have a special schedule to allow students and staff to view the solar eclipse. The schedule goes as follows:
Period 1 8:00 AM-8:45 AM
Period 2 8:55 AM-9:40 AM
Drill 9:40 AM-10:15 AM
Brunch 9:40 AM-10:20 AM
Period 3 10:30 AM-11:20 AM
Period 4 11:30 AM-12:15 PM
Period 5 12:25 PM-1:10 PM
Lunch 1:10 PM-1:40 PM
Period 6 1:50 PM-2:35 PM
Period 7 2:45 PM-3:30 PM
PHS has purchased enough solar eclipse viewing glasses for everyone to view the eclipse. The glasses are ISO certified and were purchased directly from American Paper Optics, one of the vendors suggested by NASA.
Do not look at the sun without your eclipse glasses! Follow teacher instructions.
Those with eyeglasses should wear the eclipse glasses over their eyeglasses.
Do not attempt to photograph the eclipse with your cell phone unaided by a sun filter, or risk damaging your camera.
Try this out: Stand with your back to the sun and make a waffle grid with your fingers. The shadow from your hand will project an image of the solar eclipse onto the ground.
Remember to come to school wearing red, orange, and yellow!
