The game marked the end of the regular baseball season, as Piedmont gears up for league play-offs.

The eight-inning affair was capped off by senior Brendan O’Connor’s home run in the bottom of the eighth, sending Piedmont off with their fourteenth win.

At the bottom of the first inning, senior Matt Horst put Piedmont on the board with a sacrifice fly, cutting San Lorenzo’s two point lead in half.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the third, when O’Connor scored a run off of  Horst’s RBI single to tie the score at 2-2.

The combined pitching effort of Horst and senior Cooper Wetherbee held the Rebels to two runs, carrying the tied game to extra innings.

At the top of the eighth, Piedmont escaped a bases loaded jam after Wetherbee pitched into a ground-out at first base.

At the bottom of the eighth, with one out and bases empty, O’Connor hit a home run that sealed the win for the Highlanders.

“It was awesome,” O’Connor said. “It was a fast one to home plate so I just swung at it hard.”

O’Connor said that at first, he did not know that he had hit a homerun.

“I looked at my team and they were going crazy,” O’Connor said.

O’Connor said that although the game was tight, it was good to come out with a win.

“The seniors were battling to get a win on their senior day and I am just really proud of them,” head coach Eric Olson said.

Olson said that he is excited for the team to begin league play offs and hopes the team can come off on the winning ends of future games.

“We’re just gonna keep playing good, fundamental, Piedmont Highlander baseball,” Olson said.

The team will begin league play offs next Tuesday against Mt. Eden at Piedmont at 4:00.
